The story of the well of Ruma: How did Uthman ibn Affan buy half a well, bankrupting the greedy Jew?
"The Well of Ruma and Uthman ibn Affan | A true story about the most expensive water deal in the history of Medina, and an endowment that continues to provide water for the people after more than 1400 years.
In Yathrib after the Hijra, a Jewish man named Benjamin monopolized the Well of Ruma, the sweetest water in the city, and sold it to the Muslims at exorbitant prices when they were in dire need. The noble companion Uthman ibn Affan, may God be pleased with him, heard of their suffering and went to buy the entire well, but its owner refused. He bought only half of it, on the condition that one day would be his and the next the owner's. Benjamin thought he had discovered a "brilliant" plan to double his profits on his day... So what happened when the people discovered that Uthman's day was completely free?
This story is documented in the Sunnah, in the hadith of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever buys the Well of Ruma and makes his bucket available in it along with the buckets of the Muslims will have something better than it in Paradise." Uthman later bought the entire well and made it a lasting endowment, which continues to this day to provide water for the people of Medina and feed the needy with the fruits of its date palms.
A story about Ongoing charity, a never-ending act of giving.
