It gets good at x point is such a terrible way to recommend a story. It sets up wrong expectations and paints an incentive to rush through that point. One piece has slow start, so it suffers by that even more. Usually, fans don't mean it was boring before but rather that some of the buildup begun to pay off so they really got into it at that point. But in their excitment to get others to enjoy it too, fans, by selling the story like that, are somewhat ruining the experience. A story shouldn't be something that you just get through or catch up, it's something you should enjoy. East Blue is a good start for One Piece, it sets up the story and world in a really nice way, but it also takes its time to tell the story. It's very different tone compared to what we have now, with the story in its climax.
Oh man, my heart aches at the slowness of pre-timeskip. It was so cozy, so casual with the strawhats just doing mundane things like fishing. Maybe I just miss the Going Merry, how small and simple a ship it was.
