Orthodoxy in America - with Fr. Josiah Trenham

Jonathan Pageau

I sat down with Fr. Josiah Trenham, archpriest at St. Andrew Orthodox Church in Riverside, California, and founder and director of Patristic Nectar Publications. With over 30 years of experience as a priest in America, Fr. Josiah has a wealth of knowledge about the state of Orthodoxy in the West and the challenges converts face. We discuss various aspects of Orthodox and contemporary life: beauty, money, politics, sexuality, the youth, psychedelics, artificial intelligence, and more. Enjoy.

15:30 I had spent the last 13 years as an atheist. Now I can happily say that my wife, my kids, and myself were baptized into our local Orthodox parish 3 weeks ago this Saturday.

I’m from a small country in Latin America. I became nihilistic and a little bit woke. I was miserable and resentful. I started watching a ton of Dr. Peterson videos and that got me to Jonathan Pageau. I’ve started really listening to Orthodox content (Patristic Nectar included) and decided to convert. I’m in the process and going to liturgy. Thank you for all of what you do 🙏🏼

As a former Protestant who converted 10 years ago, I have a personal perspective. For me (and probably others) it is the disenchantment of the Protestant religions. I don’t go to church to attend a concert with 15 minutes of Biblical sermon. It felt like chaos. My personal issue was misinterpretation of scripture My Orthodox Church is peaceful and I can feel God there. I appreciate that the church doctrine hasn’t changed in order to fit societal trends.

As a former atheist, I've always appreciated that true believers had something in common with me: we both care about the question.

Regarding how many Orthodox Bishops does it take to change a light bulb joke, I have been reading the Desert Fathers. And a fictional answer based on that would be, the answer given makes sense because they decided it was too luxurious to have a light bulb, and so they became grateful that the light bulb had been taken away from them, so that they could remember it is dark in the world, and that Christ is our light, and so they returned to their prayers.

"That you're not a saint, that the Lord is going to make you one" why did that instantly bring me tears

As a life long agnostic the shutting down of churches during the lockdown was the first time I had ever stood in solidarity with any religious group. Now that has lead me down the path of exploring the faith in earnest.

I'm Serbian Orthodox and I enjoy listening to Fr. Josiah. I'm happy to know that Orthodox Christianity is getting bigger and bigger in North America and that many people are converting. Us Serbs suffered so much from NATO bombing and West & American politics in previous years. Please keep us in your minds and prayers and don't let that repeat.

My son and I came from no faith and are Catechumen at our Orthodox Christian Church. Orthodoxy is the only "Christ unto to ages of ages" as in, the same yesterday, today, and forever. Other denominations have too much outside ideology influencing their faith. We are on track to be baptized this spring. The Orthodox Church has felt like home since the first day I walked in. It has been about 6 months and I wish I had found Orthodoxy sooner but am blessed to have faith now.

I'm not Orthodox, but the wisdom that these two men have just brings tears to my eyes. God bless you brothers. May God lead me to where he wants me to be in this life.
