Living Apart Together after 40: healthy independence—or a relationship red flag?

More singles are questioning the traditional relationship timeline. You meet, date, become exclusive, move in together, get married, and share one home.

But what if you’re deeply committed to someone…and still choose to live separately?

That’s known as Living Apart Together (LAT), and for people dating in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond, it can make a lot of sense.

You may already have your own home, career, children, pets, routines, and a life you worked hard to build.

So the question becomes:
How does this person fit into the life I already have?
Living separately is not automatically a red flag.

💚 TASTY:
You both genuinely want the arrangement.
You communicate consistently.
You make time for each other.
You’re emotionally available.
You’re part of each other’s lives.
You talk openly about the future, finances, family, holidays, and expectations.

🚩 NOT TASTY:
“I need my independence” really means “I don’t want accountability.”
They disappear when things get serious.
They avoid conversations about the future.
You never truly become part of their life.
You’re constantly wondering where you stand.

My Single Lovelies, separate houses are not necessarily a red flag. Separate lives might be.

There’s a huge difference between:
“We have separate homes, but we’re building a life together.”
and
“We have separate homes, separate plans, and I’ll see you when it’s convenient.”
The structure of your relationship can look different—but the standards shouldn’t.

You still deserve consistency, communication, respect, emotional availability, and someone willing to make room for you.

🍽️ Watch behavior, not just words.
Patterns over promises.
Every date is data.

Food Always Talks.
