Update on Clara and Clarita, they were released into a national park in 2018!

Oh my gosh Clara tried to help her unlock the door! Man those were some strong onions I used tonite.

The mama was trying to unscrew the latch to her cage 😭

Those expressive eyes and her hands are remarkably human

Did you guys see how she was twisting the lock to open the cage to get her baby. Awwww and she kissed her😊

This cage exists for these situations. Clara isn't in this cage 24/7 nor even for an hour a day. It was a precaution.

I love how Clara helps unscrew the cage to get to that baby. I think she's going to be a good mom.

By the way, the small cage is only an observation cage so baby can be removed if mother hurts her. After the bonding and once they are sure baby is safe, both are released back into natural habitats. Don't worry, they get the best care.

The female handler is amazing....very experienced and delicate with the re-introduction

She knows that's her baby and very clearly wants her back.

My heart melted seeing how much she wanted her baby. I’m glad she let Clarita nurse. God bless the animals and those who care for them.

A beautiful reunion. Orangutans are such great mothers.

The cage is small but that's probably just like a holding area.
She's probably in that cage for the purpose of being reunited with the child.

Omg when she said “I’m not taking your baby, she won’t be taken away anymore” 😫😩😭😭😭

The affection she has for her baby and the tenderness she shows makes me tear up.

The way she holds little Clarita with such love. Adorable.

That baby's little whines and whimpers break my heart.

For those saying that the cage is small, let me fill you in on something. I worked with rescued big cats at a sanctuary for over 7 years (see my picture). Most cages have small areas that stick out where treats are given so the animals will enter it willingly. These small areas are used to provide veterinary care and to allow keepers to get a good close up view to monitor physical well being and to look for wounds or skin problems. Quarantine areas and sick bays are also small for the same reason, as well as keeping sick animals from over exertion. Practical exotic animal husbandry sometimes requires putting animals like strong primates or aggressive big cats in small enclosures temporarily. It's necessary and only temporary.
