Somewhere in Britain right now, two men are arguing about Margaret Thatcher. While some people genuinely hate Britain's first female prime minister, others genuinely think she saved the country. But here is what nobody in that conversation disputes: the Britain that existed before her and the Britain that exists after her are not the same country.

It is the morning of June the eighteenth, nineteen eighty-four. On a field in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, five thousand coal miners are facing six thousand police officers. On horseback. With riot shields. With batons never before used on British streets.

This is what it looks like when a Prime Minister declares war on the British working class.

Before this dispute is over, six men will be dead. Thousands will be injured. Eleven thousand will be arrested.

But what nobody standing in that field knows is that Margaret Thatcher has been waiting for this morning for seven years. It was an execution. Planned in nineteen seventy-seven. By a woman who had already written down that the British working class is a problem to be solved.
