Continuing our reimagining series, this mix revisits the soundtrack of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, composed primarily by Koji Kondo alongside Toru Minegishi in his debut as a Nintendo composer. Majora's Mask marks something of a final chapter for Kondo as sole creative voice, a moment before large scale game development would shift music composition away from individual authorship and toward teams of specialists. Working under the breakneck pace of the game's development, Kondo produced one of his most adventurous and unconventional scores, drawing heavily from Chinese and Japanese musical tradition. The result is a soundtrack that resists easy categorization, moving between folk inflected celebration, dissonant unease, and passages of quiet melancholy, all shaped by the game's central theme of time running out.
Approached through the lens of Masayoshi Takanaka's style, these reinterpretations look for the melodic warmth and rhythmic brightness that surface throughout the score even amid its darker intentions. Kondo's writing, even at its most anxious, carries a melodic clarity and a sense of phrasing that translates naturally into Takanaka's expressive, sunlit approach.
