Jalena is speaking on an unspoken rule that is not a rule if it's optional to acknowledge. A net play point is not something a player has control over, and IMO is not their fault. The player can't control where that net ball lands and is awarded that point. So, why expect a player to be gracious and apologize? Replay the point as if the ball was hit into the net. Then no one is awarded anything "free." Why have such a rule? It makes it controversial. To call someone uneducated on said rule that a player is not required to apologize for is, quite frankly, senseless. Jalena's argument is baseless, self entitled, and used as justification for her rude behavior after the match. She could have just left the court, unspoken just like that damn unspoken net ball rule.
Ostopenko said Taylor was uneducated and has no class but both of them are doing the same job and being paid the same. So, who is the uneducated one...ππππππππππ
After watching the match replay, I now get why Ostapenko was so upset.
She is a former French Open winner (beating Simona Halep in 2017) who has since failed to live up to expectations (as a singles player). She's a severely frustrated ex-champion who is convinced that Taylor Townsend is not in her league.
and at 3-0 up, probably allowed herself to think that the first set was already won,
only to lose it at the death.
Then she probably convinced herself that she would mount a fightback,
only to lose the match in straight sets (ouch!) and have to mount a fight back
just to avoid having to take a B with her L.
(B for Bagel). After nearly losing the second set 6-0. And let's not forget the lucrative Grand Slam prize money that increases significantly from round to round. A good run at the slams will probably account for half (or more) of the yearly income of rank outsiders like Taylor and Ostapenko.
You always have to at least ask the question if race had anything to do with it (and maybe a little more so when Eastern Europeans are involved),
but we are still talking about top professional athletes,
where tasting defeat (in the way I've just described it) is never easy.
After all this unnecessary drama....I sure hope jelena's friends sit her down and give her the business on embarrassing them as well as herself in public.
A net ball is not a violation of any tennis rules when in active play. You donβt need to apologise unless you want to out of courtesy. So what the umpire say. Helena you cannot be judge jury attorney in one throw. Gaal get over yourself. Losing 6 - 1 means you got out played, out skilled and out classed . Take the L like a Loser. Better luck next time. Do not undermine people like that
