Animals that attack back all have an hp threshold where they run away but first and foremost there is a distance threshold too. If youre too far away, the animal will run away regardless of its hp when you damage it.
If you're close enough (doesnt have to be normal aggro range) it will run towards you to attack.
Additionally, when checking flesh or other material gather, the red area is what the tool "destroys" (wastes).
The hatchet and pickaxe (stone) both gather the same amount per hit but the stone pickaxe, in the end, will result in more as it destroys about like 15% less.
so if it gave like 100 fat from fully harvesting an animal, the hatchet and pickaxe may both give "10" per hit but in the end, the pickaxe will give 85 whilst the hatchet may give 70
A known example (though maybe not conciously so) is that the stone pickaxe gives less stone than a metal pickaxe and salvaged
The metal and salvaged give the same amount but the metal takes longer with less gather. They both have no red (no "waste")
small details, not gamechanging info to know
