I missed the storm of the year… but I definitely didn’t miss the treasure.
While everyone else was hitting the beaches after a major nor’easter, I was upstate visiting my son at college. I managed to sneak in a little woods detecting near our Airbnb, finding bullets, shot coins, and signs of history before finally getting back home and heading straight for the beach.
My first stop was Dead Horse Bay, where the storm had completely rearranged the shoreline. Bottles and light material were everywhere, and then something even more unexpected happened — I ran into the legendary Aqua Tigriger and Phyllis!
But the real treasure hunt came the following day.
I hit a South Shore beach and started studying exactly how the storm had moved the sand. Instead of finding one concentrated cut, targets were scattered across the entire beach. Then I found the hard-packed shell layer — what I consider one of the most important “treasure layers” on a beach.
That’s when the gold started showing up.
First came a beautiful 14K gold earring. Then, later in the hunt, I got a signal in the hard pack that turned into one of the best rings I’ve ever recovered — a heavy gold ring with five diamonds.
This hunt is a perfect example of why you can’t assume every major storm will strip a beach the same way. Sometimes the sand disappears. Sometimes it gets pushed in. Sometimes the treasure zone is obvious, and sometimes you have to hunt the entire beach to find it.
The most important rule?
SHOW UP.
Some days you get skunked. Some days you hit a bonanza. But you’ll never know unless you swing the detector.
