In the Harz foothills, it's the last day of the potato harvest. Farmer Steffen Thudt and his team dig 30 tons of potatoes out of the ground every year. The potato harvester dates back to 1981. So far, the old machine has served faithfully. But this time, the harvester is suddenly making strange noises. Steffen immediately starts troubleshooting. Up until now, any necessary repairs have always been quick and easy. But this time, it seems to be a bigger problem. In the worst-case scenario, the gearbox is broken. That would be bad news, because the potatoes need to be harvested today.
In Schleswig-Holstein, there's excitement among the calves. It's time for a thorough cleaning of their igloos. For Jörg Schulz and his apprentice, Lara Konarsky, this means they first have to hook up the five enormous igloos one by one and lift them away with the wheel loader. Only then can they clean them out. Afterward, the areas are disinfected and limed. Finally, Jörg and Lara spread fresh bedding. The effort is worthwhile. The calves' delight in their freshly made beds is clearly visible.
At Sonnenschein Farm in Aurich, Lower Saxony, it rained heavily the night before. The pigsty's runs are full of mud. This means more work for Hermann Poppen and his employees. Mud, manure, and wet straw have to be removed, and the pigs brought into the barn in the meantime. The pigs are easy to handle. This is important for Hermann because he fully integrates his employees into the daily farm routine despite their disabilities. Simon Kröll is doing a voluntary ecological year on the farm and is experiencing a first: he gets to haul away the manure with the wheel loader.
In Hamburg-Moorburg, the farrier is visiting the Ecks family's riding stable. Dennis von Holdt and his team have been coming to the farm for years to care for Isa's own horses and the boarding horses. Dennis and his team have to adapt to each horse individually to ensure its hooves are perfectly shaped. They forge the horseshoes right there on the farm in the furnace at 800 degrees Celsius. "The stable becomes a kind of nail salon for horses," says Isa.
