Coldiron Gap, Blue Ridge Mountains β October 1894.
A woman goes up her own trail at a quarter past four in the afternoon, the way
she has every fair evening since she was seventeen years old. She does not come
down before dark. When she comes down at dawn, something about her hands is
wrong. Her country doctor writes it down. Her husband will not speak of it. And
sixty-one years later, a Forest Service surveyor working a boundary line above
the old logging camp will find something pressed into wet mortar that has been
waiting a long time to be looked at.
This is the case of Verna Sudduth. It was signed off by the sheriff with the
wrong word, and the file was never closed.

β οΈ A NOTE ON CONTENT:
This story is a work of atmospheric historical fiction, inspired by Appalachian folklore, county-record traditions, and accounts shared by listeners of this channel. Names, places, dates, and documents are invented for the story. Any resemblance to real persons living or deceased is coincidental. Intended for adult audiences who enjoy slow, psychological horror β nothing graphic, nothing loud, only what waits at the edge of the trees.
Thank you for listening. Watch your footing.
