Two Slingerland Snares -A Slingerland Radio King and a Buddy Rich TDR Snare Drum

Here is a video featuring two 5' x 14" snare drums, a modern Slingerland Radio King snare and a Buddy Rich snare.
I show you both drums, change the heads and then play them both on the kit.
For camparison I also play a 14"x 6.5" Doc Sweeney Olivewood Snare
The Drum Set is a 2018 Doc Sweeney African Olive Wood Stave Set: 20" x 16" BD, 10"x 8" Tom, 12"x 8" Tom, 14"x14" Floor Tom

Regarding the newer Gibson owned Nashville era Radio King snare 🥁. I believe Vaughncraft made solid maple shells in that era and possibly could be the shell manufacturer for that model. I'm sure it will be a keeper with a die cast top hoop!

I've found that 8-lug snare drums have a lower fundamental pitch than 10-lug drums, that's why the Radio King seems resistant to higher tunings. I whole-heartedly agree that a die-cast hoop will help the Radio King. My favorite setup for old snares is a die-cast on top, and a 1.6 triple-flanged hoop on the bottom (like Stuart Copeland). I had a late 50s Gretsch 5x14 snare, and it sounded the best with a 70s Gretsch die-cast on top, and a triple-flanged hoop from an old MIJ stencil kit on the bottom. I made more money renting it out to producers than actually playing it.

The new radio king snares are Craviotto shells. Doesn’t look like that is what you have. They just came out about a year ago.

Love your videos Rick! If you are digging those Doc Sweeney drums, can I suggest you check out Cask drum craft. Micah from Cask makes amazing steam bent shells under his own brand name, but also supplies his shells to some of the other custom drum companies, including Doc Sweeney!

Fantastic playing, so musical! The Doc Sweeney set sounds phenomenal.
Too bad about the RK reissue, the fit & finish seem more in line with a budget or student snare.

Curious if you know about Chicago drum co est 2011 by ex-employees of Slingerland. They make their version which seem quite good, I plan on getting one soon myself

Rick: couldn’t one put the stick-destroyer hoop onto a lathe and take the height way down!to the level of a good rolled hoop? and then smooth out and chamfer the edges?
