Heaven’s Gate was insane

Breakfast Serial

How did this guy convince dozens of people to abandon their lives… cut themselves off from the world… and ultimately believe a spaceship was hiding behind a comet?
Marshall Applewhite didn’t look like a mastermind.
He looked like the guy yelling about aliens outside a convenience store.
But somehow…
he built one of the most infamous cults in American history.
And in 1997, it ended in the largest mass suicide on U.S. soil.
Today I’m digging into Heaven’s Gate — the UFO cult that believed Earth was about to be “recycled,” and the only way to survive was to leave your body behind and board an alien spacecraft.
Yes… really.
Grab a bowl of cereal.
Because this one gets weird.

The eyes say it all. I 've heard them called Manson lamps and that term is perfect.

As long as there are emotionally vulnerable, lonely people looking to be a part of something larger than them, there will be charlatans who take advantage of them.

These cult members make me especially sad, those videos of them make it SO clear they’re in the trenches of belief. They were able to completely rid themselves of a will to live because of a false belief implanted by some psycho. Humans are just fragile animals

The biggest reason things like this happen is that there are always people who are isolated and seeking community. That, more than anything else, is what cults prey on

When I was 20 in 1993, they put an ad in an Atlanta newspaper, that was so far out...I wrote them. They sent me a hand written letter, and THE VIDEOTAPE. I watched the video, for 45 seconds, and was to grossed to have it in my family's house. You have a hilarious take on it! You're Greatness.

Makes me laugh how they are referred to as UFO's, then they go on to identify them

A friend of mine in the pagan community met Applewhite in the seventies, said he was obviously insane even then.

Marshall Applewhite had worked in a small town that I lived in right around when this happened. Even decades later, when this went down, many locals remembered him and we're not surprised when this happened.

5:09 So that's where L. Ron Hubbard got it from, and rebranded them as theatons or some dumb shit.

Alright Cornflakes…
Let’s be honest.
If a guy walked up to you today and said:
“Aliens are coming and the only way to join them is to leave your body behind.”
Would you believe him?
Because 39 people did.
So I’m curious:
What do you think is the real reason people joined Heaven’s Gate?
1⃣ Loneliness
2⃣ Charisma
3⃣ Spiritual curiosity
4⃣ Something else entirely

I remember watching one of his hour and a half long tapes and I realized he only blinked 28 times😂

I still remember as a kid the news report when it happened

You know what? The guy in the thumbnail has a really trustworthy face. I'm gonna devote my entire life (and death) to him and his beliefs. What could possibly go wrong?

Heavens Gate the cult of cults, they don’t make em like they used to. I remember hearing about them & the news coverage they got not to mention the jokes from MadTV, SNL, sitcom episodes of the mid to late 90s involving a cult leader that was based off Marshall/Heavens Gate

So happy to see this format back. The levity you bring to the subject matter has always been my favorite aspect of the channel. The void format is still cool too but too serious.

Apart from a fairly recent HBO documentary series I have been WAITING for a decent YouTube channel to cover Heavens Gate properly and who pops up on my feed just now? That’s right it’s breakfast time baby

I remember when this happened. Helicopters and TV news vans along with San Diego sheriff officers were all crowded around that house. A couple of us rode our horses over to watch all the craziness. It actually lasted for days. They finally tore that house down and changed the name of the street.
