You are standing beside water you cannot drink. A pond with a green cast to it, the creek running brown after rain, salt water, a barrel standing open since August with things living in it.
You can take drinking water out of that, and out of ground that looks bone dry, with no filter, no tablet, no fuel, no fire and no machine of any kind. A sheet of clear plastic, a hole, a cup and a stone. The sun does the rest.
My grandmother showed me without meaning to, with a pot of soup. She lifted the lid and tipped it toward me and the whole underside was running with water. I asked where it came from, since it was not there before she put the lid on. She said it was in the pot. It came out of the soup, went up, stopped when it met the cold of the lid, and now it is coming back down. Then she said the thing that stayed with me, and she said it about soup: whatever was in that soup is still in that soup. Only the water left.
What we go through:
Why evaporation leaves salt, silt and bacteria behind, and why this is not filtering Why there is nothing to clog, nothing to replace and nothing to run out Building it properly: the hole, the container, the sheet, the stone and the seal What to do if you have dirty water rather than damp ground, and what to do if you have neither The four things that decide whether yours works at all Running a tube out under the sheet so you never have to break the seal Where to dig, and why the best spot is a compromise between sun and damp The pan and bowl version with no digging, and the pot and lid version with fire
The limits, and I want you to hear all of them. It gives you perhaps a quart in a day, which is a fraction of what one person needs. It does not remove anything that evaporates along with the water, so it is no answer to ground with fuel or chemicals in it. Distilled water is flat and demineralised and is not right as a long term supply. You will lose more water digging the hole in hot sun than it returns on the first day. And worst of all, it can make a person feel that water is a solved problem when it is not. This is what you do when you have failed to plan.
There is a story in here too. A designer in Germany turned this exact principle into a clear cone over a black pan, with no filter and no parts, good for years. It won awards and went into museums. It failed because it cost around seventy dollars by the time it reached a shop, and the people it was meant for do not have seventy dollars. The physics was right and it still never reached anybody. The version that reaches people is the one made of a sheet of plastic and a stone, because nobody has to fund that.
This week, do not wait until you need it. Build one in the garden on an ordinary afternoon and make a mess of it. Find out what a bad seal does and how far out the stone can go before the drops miss the cup. Then look at how much is in there at the end of the day.
Tell me in the comments how much water you got and where you put the hole. And if you have told me your county before, tell me instead where your water actually comes from: a town main, a well, or a spring.
Next time we stay with water, because a well with no power in it is not a dead well.
I gathered the whole of it into a book at eliasyoder dot com.
The people who built this country with their hands knew that, and we are only just starting to remember it.
