Fun Fact: Navy beans are not called that for their color but because at the time beans was a staple for the US Navy.

26:52 Max’s husband hides a Pokemon plush or figurine in the background of every video. Usually the plush is related to what is being discussed in the video. In this case, it’s a pig Pokemon because of the pork in “Pork and Beans.”

10:04 They didn't have SPRING door hinges until then. The kind that makes the door return to the center after its been opened.

Hearing the molasses flood mentioned by chat... the Boston Brown Bread episode of tasting history covers that event.

Sunny.
Slow cooker.
Slow cookers, croc pots, they boil the meat over night and can make some of the most mouth watering roasts.

3:58 oh boy, the chore of 'picking over beans' which is still a thing today from what I hear.
This is actually sifting by hand through all the beans to make sure the harvester didn't also pick up bean-sized rocks that can get in your pot.

I think the cost of a liquor license is partly why bars are so expensive now.  Making a profit is tough when you owe the government.

Always a good time to watch someone react to Max Miller. The guy makes great stuff.

Wait, isn't Cerro Gordo the same place that Jacob Wysocki went on Game Changer? There's a cardboard standee of Sam Reich at the bottom of one of those mineshafts. 😂

Sunny reacting to Max's videos was not in my bingo book. I am so excited you did this reaction and hopefully you'll react to more! I cannot recommend his video series on Roman Colosseum foods as well as Titanic foods enough. They're my absolute favourites and I would love to see your reactions to them!

Max was referring to the double hinge so you can push in both directions.

A salted pork belly (even salted 1-2 days before) will give lots of flavor and body to the beans when boiled
Also when boiled and then baked it will still be great.
When you boil it, let it chill and then fry it - it is even greater

"I like whiskey".......subbed.

"I only order warm milk at the bar"
That you Phantom? 💀

Of note about the captions: Max's husband Jose does the captions manually for every video. (Assuming he hasn't recently hired some external service to do it)

I absolutely adore Max's videos

Glad to see another Tasting History reaction from you!  If you ever get the chance, here are several other recommendations from his channel that I'd love to see you react to:

-Feeding The Roman Army In Britain.
-The Day The Viking Age Began.
-Feeding The Gladiators Of Rome.
-The Roman Colosseum.
-Vienna's Iconic Chocolate Cake.
-The History Of Macaroni And Cheese.
-The History Of Donuts.
-The History Of The Chocolate Chip Cookie.
-Medieval Fast Food.

These previous recommendations are all personal favorites of mine on his channel, but another series of his that receives universal praise is his series of videos about food that was served aboard the Titanic.

A lot of people appreciate Max because he doesn't like everything he cooks, so it seems more realistic, but... Of all the videos I've watched of his, there's maybe a hand full of things he cooked where his immediate response wasn't "that's sooo good". At any rate, he seems to be a good enough historian, and the channel is very unique.

There’s a classic Parks and Recreation episode where Ron goes to a strip club with a FREE breakfast buffet (and he’s only there for the buffet).  After seeing this Max Miller episode, I legitimately wouldn’t be surprised that if one of the writers was a huge history buff because a strip club is sort of a modern day saloon…

About boiled meat: In the Revolutionary War, the command wanted soldiers to boil their meat provisions and ordered them to. They had to order it because no one wanted boiled meat, they all agreed it sucked boiled.
