I do love the idea behind “underconsumption” and being a responsible consumer , but I dislike the term because it implies that you are consuming below what you need to survive and NO ONE needs any makeup to survive

Some Tiktoks seem to confuse underconsumption with minimalism.
Your allowed to own alot of stuff, I have a lot of things I've got over years, but I take care of it, love and use it and buy rarely or when I need it.

“Cosplaying the poor” is a weird take because what do you mean you can’t be frugal while having money? You’re allowed to still get the full use out of your items no matter how much money you have in the bank. It isn’t cosplaying the poor it’s called being an ethical consumer…

As someone who grew up dirt poor; some rando making a tiktok about how 3 products is enough is NOT povertycore.
Povertycore is billion dollar companies selling clothes that are ruined on purpose.

I feel like the under-consumption trend is more like just regular consumption but I'm honestly just happy that we're trying to encourage people who don't have a lifestyle like this to choose to change there lifestyle and live more sustainability

I remember a video of a girl who had a charger that was an actual fire hazard, but she was keeping it because of underconsumption. All the comments were telling her that it’s okay to buy a new charger!! Because at that point it was a need, not just something to buy!!

I feel like everything good in the internet gets turned into a debate or problem. Underconsumption is awesome, but those who follow that lifestyle will always get judged, and those who don't (even if they aren't over consuming) get judged just as much. Finding the middle ground is the key, but the problem is that the internet is always telling you 100 things at once.

I just don’t think it should be called “underconsumption” that implies the person has too little when most of these people just have the perfect amount. I’ve heard some people saying “responsible consumption” and I think that’s more accurate👍👍

Bean soup theory never fails. If you don't see the use, IT WASNT MEANT FOR YOU. Tiktokers are always like "but what about me", have you ever thought that maybe JUST MAYBE, it's not about you at all because YOU don't have a problem with overconsumption. It's not for me because I don't overconsume, I don't have a problem with it though because it can help people who struggle with overconsumption or people who have not seen a normal makeup collection on TikTok before. Also, if the only reason you don't overconsume is because you're poor, that's not a flex.

I hate the "undercomsuption is poverty" take so much because you would be surprised to see how many overconsumers are in crippling debt to sustain their habits, even if they're not necessarily low income

Not a big fan of the sentiment that normally using a product until it's finished is "poverty-core". It implies that being above the poverty line entails not using what you have and that that the default is to overconsume.

I was raised with “underconsumption” because my mom is an environmental scientist who cares a lot about sustainability. We could have afforded to buy more stuff but it just felt unnecessary

Tbh the thing that pisses me off the most about these “underconsumption” videos is that some of them are just straight up lying. Like I can clearly tell you’re wearing eyeshadow, lipgloss, foundation, mascara, highlighter, and blush and I’m supposed to believe you only have 4 makeup products?

One thing the people who were talking about how 'underconsumption' is just the reality for poor people didn't mention, is that growing up in such an environment is how you get hoarding disorders. It's how you get food insecurity & eating disorders. It's how people develop a lack of financial literacy. 'Under' consuming is inherently traumatic, it is not the same thing as regular consumption where you have enough money to fulfil your needs but maybe not enough to splurge. Underconsuming is living paycheck to paycheck. It's stretching one pack of food across three days. It's getting hand me downs not only from older family members, but from FRIENDS too (some of the jeans I've held onto the longest, until they were literally splitting at the seams, I got as hand me downs from a friend that was clearing out her wardrobe). Can we maybe, like, not normalise purposefully traumatising yourself for a trend? Can we normalise just... Living sustainably without causing ourselves lasting psychological damage? Because being poor is traumatising, & purposefully living like you're poor is... Most likely also traumatising. Because it's not true 'underconsumption' if it's only about makeup. That's called scaling it back. If you're still spending exorbitant amounts of money on deliveries, clothes, plastic junk you don't need, that's not really underconsuming, now is it?
