Fourteen years after Game of Thrones Season 2 first aired, it is still remembered as one of the strongest seasons of the entire series.
But does it actually hold up?
In this new series, I’m going back through Season 2 one episode at a time and taking a much closer look at the writing, characters, themes, cinematography, adaptation choices, and the smaller details that helped make Game of Thrones what it was.
We’re starting with Season 2, Episode 1: “The North Remembers.”
This episode spends a lot of time reestablishing the world after Ned Stark’s death, while also introducing one of the biggest ideas running through the season: power.
Who has it? What does it actually mean? And how do characters like Tyrion, Cersei, Joffrey, Robb, Daenerys, and Stannis each understand it differently?
There is a lot here that still works incredibly well, but there are also some choices—especially around the Stannis storyline and a few recap-heavy scenes—that feel much weaker on a rewatch.
So the question is simple:
Does Game of Thrones Season 2 still hold up?
And by the time we reach Episode 10, hopefully we’ll have an answer.
