Is someone watching your phone? Tom Callahan, a retired security installer, walks you through 12 simple checks for iPhone and Android, from location sharing to remote-access apps. No computer skills needed.

What Tom found on Margaret's phone is at Number 4. If you find something you truly don't recognize, don't remove it yet. Write it down, and watch Number 4 for the safe order to follow.

THE SUNDAY CHECK (tape this inside a kitchen cabinet)
Every Sunday, check two lists: who is seeing your location, and which devices are signed in to your account. Once a month, run all twelve checks below.

THE 12 CHECKS
If your menu looks different, search Settings for the words in quotes.
12. Location sharing. iPhone: Find My, then People. Android: Google Maps, your picture, then Location sharing.
11. The dot at the top of your screen. iPhone: Control Center (swipe up from the bottom on a phone with a Home button). Android: search "privacy dashboard".
10. Battery use. iPhone: Settings, Battery, Last 10 Days. Android: search "battery usage".
9. Data use. iPhone: Settings, Cellular. Android: search "data usage". This only shows your phone plan's data, not Wi-Fi.
8. Accounts on your phone. iPhone: your name and email at the top of Settings. Android: search "accounts".
7. Email forwarding. On a computer, look for "Forwarding" in your Gmail or iCloud Mail settings, and check Filters too.
6. Other devices getting your texts. iPhone: Settings, Apps, Messages, Text Message Forwarding. Android with Google Messages: your picture, then Device pairing.
5. Call forwarding. iPhone: Settings, Apps, Phone, Call Forwarding. Android: Phone app, three dots, Settings. Or dial 611 if your carrier uses it, or call the customer-service number on your bill.
4. Apps you don't remember installing. iPhone: Settings, General, iPhone Storage. Android: Settings, Apps.
3. Profiles and admin apps. iPhone: Settings, General, VPN and Device Management. Android: search "device admin apps".
2. App permissions. iPhone: Settings, Privacy and Security, then Microphone, Camera and Location Services. Android: search "permission manager".
1. Devices signed in to your account. iPhone: Settings, then your name. Android: Google Account, Security, Your devices. Turn on two-step verification.
