First Reading
“They recognized the grace given me” (Galatians 2:1-2, 7-14)
Reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Galatians

Brothers and sisters,
after fourteen years,

I went up again to Jerusalem;

I was with Barnabas, and I also took Titus with me.

I went up in response to a revelation,

and I set forth there the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles;

I explained it privately to the most important people,

because I didn't want to risk running

or having run in vain.

Now they saw that the gospel was entrusted to me
to the uncircumcised (that is, the Gentiles),
just as it was entrusted to Peter to the circumcised (that is, the Jews).

For if God worked through Peter as an apostle to the circumcised,
he also worked through me as an apostle to the Gentiles.

When James, Peter, and John,
who are considered the pillars of the church, recognized the grace given me,
they extended their hands to me and Barnabas,
in a sign of fellowship,
showing that we are sent to the Gentiles,
and they to the circumcised.

They only asked us
to remember the poor,
which I took great care to do.

But when Peter came to Antioch,

I openly opposed him,
because he was in the wrong.

For before some men from James's household arrived,

Peter used to eat with the Gentile believers.

But after they arrived,
he began to withdraw and keep to himself,
out of fear of those who were Jews.

All the other Jewish believers joined in the same charade,
so that even Barnabas was drawn into it.

But when I saw that they were not acting in line
according to the truth of the gospel,

I said to Peter in front of them all:

“If you, being a Jew,
live like a Gentile and not like a Jew,
how is it that you compel Gentiles
to follow Jewish customs?” “

— The word of the Lord.

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place.

just as John the Baptist taught his disciples.”

He replied,

“When you pray, say:

“Father,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.
And lead us not into temptation.”
