Let's talk about the main events of the day.
In December 1924, two unknown assailants entered Patriarch Tikhon's chambers at the Donskoy Monastery. Their gunshots killed his cell attendant, Yakov Polozov, who had assisted the saint for over twenty years. According to accounts, he died in the Patriarch's arms. Four months later, Tikhon himself passed away. He had lived through years of persecution, arrests, and the struggle for church unity.
He became Patriarch in the fall of 1917, when fighting was raging in Moscow. After voting, the Local Council selected three candidates, and the final choice was made by lot. Before the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, Elder Alexy Zosimovsky took out a note with Tikhon's name. He was destined to lead the Church during the years when churches were being destroyed and priests were being killed.
In a 1918 letter, the saint addressed those involved in the bloody massacres: "Come to your senses, you madmen!" He declared them excommunicated from ecclesiastical communion. Neither the Bolsheviks nor Lenin were named in the text: the condemnation applied to those who had committed violence and persecution. The path to return remained open through repentance.
During the famine, the Church collected donations, and the Patriarch permitted the donation of precious jewelry and items not used in liturgical services. He objected to the confiscation of sacred vessels. The authorities presented this as a refusal to help the starving, and the confiscation campaign was accompanied by trials and executions.
When Tikhon was arrested, the Renovationists, with the support of state authorities, seized the church administration. They presented the order to hand over documents to the Patriarch's legal deputy as a transfer of power to themselves. Their council declared Tikhon defrocked and abolished the patriarchate. The saint rejected these decisions.
After his release, he again defended church unity. Bishop Hilarion Troitsky helped him resist the schism. At the same time, those who had joined the Renovationists retained the opportunity to repent and return to the Church.
Tikhon died on April 7, 1925, the Feast of the Annunciation. Huge crowds came to bid him farewell. In 1992, his relics were discovered in the Donskoy Monastery, where people still come to him in prayer.
Remembering his life, we see the price at which the faith was preserved. Under pressure, in prison, amidst losses, the Patriarch continued to care for people and protect the Church.
