If you're going through pain from the loss of a loved one, watch this for a gentle guide to healing the Islamic way, and understand how a person in a situation like yours, Sheikh Belal Assad, overcame grief from losing his son and brother.

Losing someone you love is the loss we all know is coming and can never prepare for. This video is for anyone grieving right now, anyone who has lost a parent, a child, a spouse, a brother, a sister or a friend, and who is still waiting for the sadness to behave the way people told them it would. If you have been told your iman should have stopped your tears by now, this is especially for you.

We follow Sheikh Belal Assad's own account of the accident in Lebanon that took his son Ibrahim and his brother, the premonition he ignored before it happened, the moment he says that incident showed him his son was never his to own, the support he says arrived after the impact and never before it, the khalwa (seclusion with Allah) that carried him, and the night prayer, qiyam al-layl, he says became the sweetest thing he had ever tasted.

Alongside his story we look at what the Quran and Sunnah say about grief, including Yusuf 12:90: "Surely whoever is mindful ˹of Allah˺ and patient, then certainly Allah never discounts the reward of the good-doers.”, and the words Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un; the tears of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ at the loss of his own son Ibrahim; the narration in Tirmidhi of the House of Praise promised to the parent who loses a child; and the du'a taught to Umm Salamah for the one struck by calamity.

If you are grieving, you are not required to be finished with it. You are only asked to keep returning.
