He built a $400 million empire… escaped the country… and still walked free.
Tony Mokbel was one of the most powerful figures in Melbourne’s underworld, rising from a small pizza shop owner to the head of a massive drug trafficking empire.
Born overseas and raised in Melbourne, Mokbel started with small businesses before becoming involved in organized crime. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, he was linked to a large-scale syndicate known as “The Company,” which authorities believed was responsible for importing chemicals capable of producing millions of ecstasy pills and large quantities of methamphetamine.
At his peak, the operation was estimated to have a turnover of around $400 million, with international supply chains, multiple properties, luxury cars, and business fronts across Australia.
Mokbel became a central figure during the Melbourne Gangland War, a violent period between 1998 and 2006 that saw dozens of killings linked to organized crime networks.
As police pressure increased through major investigations like Operation Piranha, Mokbel made a dramatic escape in 2006. Using a yacht, he fled Australia and lived in Greece for months while remaining one of the country’s most wanted fugitives.
He was eventually arrested in Athens in 2007 and extradited back to Australia, where he was sentenced to decades in prison for drug trafficking and leading a criminal organization.
But the story didn’t end there.
The revelation of the “Lawyer X” scandal — involving a defense lawyer secretly acting as a police informant — led to major legal challenges. Convictions were overturned, sentences reduced, and after nearly 20 years behind bars, Tony Mokbel was released in 2026.
This documentary explores the full story of Tony Mokbel — from his rise in Melbourne’s underworld to his dramatic escape, prison years, and controversial release.
Was he a criminal mastermind… or the product of a broken system?
