Well then court musicians created the bhani which Palghat Mani Iyer championed… ‘secular’ doesn’t mean the art suddenly isn’t sacred; just because a song mentions a deity 1000 times doesn’t mean it is full of devotion when sung.

As an example of the continuous unbroken tradition of our music and its relationship to worship consider the following..(only one example from hundreds..see "the DikshitarWhisperer" for more..the kriti narmadA kAvEri tiranilayE of the Dikshitar cannot be disconnected from the narmadA aStakam of Adi Sankara !  

the narmadA aStakam ( very first line ) of Adi Sankara establishes the relation between the word "narma-dA" , playfulness ( = khEla) and taranga = WAVES !, bhanga = broken up, ranjita = shining

sa-bindu sindhu sus-khElat taraṅga bhaṅga rañjitaṃ

shining , playful drops from broken up waves illuminate the narmadA dEvi in Adi Sankaras vision,


1. But it is the Dikshitar who assigns the kriti to the vAyu bhuta (see the tir-anila-yE mudra for anila = Wind)
Why ? because vAyu breaks the water surface to create joyful waves and pleasing ripples.
vAyu animates life, vAyu is prAna, vAyu creates motion, including the joyful drops and waves !
This is the basis for the choice of rAga nAmadESi for the vAyu bhuta kriti narmadA kAvEri at tiruvaiyAru..in the Dikshitar vision !
The rAga chosen nAmadESi is given its mudra by the word “narmadA”..

Indeed narmadA kAvEri is one of the 5 pancha bhuta kritis of the Dikshitar at tiruvaiyAru worshipping pranatartihara and dharmasamvardhani !

2. sAmanta rAga for agni is due to sAmanta implying boundary/perimeter whereas kSEtrapAla is Boundary preserver, who is kAla-bhairava in tiruvaiyAru..none other than agni of fire aspect of Siva. (the mudra vahni is used for Fire)

3. nAyaki for AkASa invoking the gananAyaka = pranava ganapati ! (the mudra “anantam” is used for the Sky )

4. madhyamAvati for prthvi indicating the bhulOka that lies in the middle between pAtAla and swarga..(the mudra dhara is used for the Earth)

5. nAta for jala where the pranata mudra (in the word pranatArtihara) signals the bowing and surrendering to water for p-Apa-harana ..the ceremonial purifying dip in tirthas (mudra Apa for Water)
