Preparations for surgery are in full swing at the specialized equine hospital in Gwacheon today. The anesthetic injection alone requires several times more than that of a human. Two to three minutes after the injection, the massive horse collapses to the floor like a docile lamb. Safely transporting it to the operating table is a critical moment. Everyone must evacuate before the anesthesia wears off after the surgery. Their daily life resembles a battlefield. Meanwhile, a horse that hasn't eaten anything for a week is brought in. Crying out in pain, the horse struggles to avoid crossing the hospital threshold and desperately resists getting onto the examination table. The safety of the veterinarians is at risk. The veterinarians are deeply troubled by the horse, which shows no visible external injuries. Eventually, the veterinarian decides to perform a major surgery: an open abdominal surgery. Inside the horse's intestines is a stone the size of three adult fists. The situation is so severe that there is a risk of the intestines rupturing. Faced with this crossroads of life and death, the veterinarians are left in a dilemma.
On the other hand, a horse hospital in Jangsu, North Jeolla Province, primarily handles the breeding of stallions worth hundreds of millions of won. Because pedigree is paramount for racehorses, international regulations prohibit artificial insemination, allowing only natural mating. The veterinarians are responsible for everything from the mating process to pre- and post-breeding health management. Since horses are in a state of extreme excitement, it is common for them to jump over fences or kick with their hind legs during mating, resulting in injuries to people. We follow the lives of these "veterinarians"—the healers of speechless animals who run alongside horses behind the racetrack.
