In the summer of 1972, something strange was happening in Defiance, Ohio.
During the early morning hours, reports began coming from an area near the Norfolk and Western railroad tracks around Fifth Street. Witnesses described encountering a large, hairy figure unlike anything they expected to see walking through town.
Then the story became even stranger.
Railroad workers reported their own encounters. One account described a towering, hairy figure with large feet, fangs, blue jeans, and a large stick resting across its shoulder. Another contemporary report stated that a man had been struck on the shoulder with a piece of lumber.
Before long, the Defiance Police Department was involved.
Police Chief Donald Breckler publicly addressed the reports, officers increased their attention to the area, and local newspapers began covering what residents were already calling a āWolfman.ā
On August 2, 1972, Ellen Armstrong of the Defiance Crescent-News reported on the strange events occurring near Fifth Street. Additional newspaper coverage followed as stories continued to circulate through Defiance and beyond.
But what was actually happening?
Was someone wearing a disguise and deliberately frightening people?
Was the entire situation fueled by rumors and publicity?
Could witnesses have mistaken an ordinary person or animal for something much stranger?
Or did several people in Defiance, Ohio encounter something in 1972 that has never been adequately explained?
In this documentary, we go back to the original reports and reconstruct the case from the beginning. We examine the encounters involving railroad workers Ted Davis and Tom Jones, the response from local law enforcement, contemporary newspaper coverage, additional reports from frightened residents, and the strange sighting reported near Tiffin, Ohio.
Weāll also separate what was actually reported in 1972 from details that became attached to the story decades later.
More than fifty years have passed, but the events of that summer remain part of Ohioās unexplained history.
