Was looking at buying a streamer, but bought a new TV as my old one cooked off. Full 24-bit / 192 kHz from the HDMI eARC into the eARC connection on my Yamaha RN-1000a receiver. Spotify app on the TV and away we go. Absolutely delicious 😋
WiiM mini into a second hand Audiolab M-DAC+. It’s a fantastic combination. The WiiM mini has all of the features the more expensive WiiM ultra etc units have like room correction etc, it switches between sources seamlessly and then the Audiolab DAC is really, really good - has proper PSU and proper analog pre amp stage to drive a power amp. Finally a happy camper here,it’s been quite a bit of experimentation on the way.
I love my Eversolo DMP-A6 Gen 2 Master Edition. It works well with my tablet, and sounds great. As for service. The power supply died in mine. I made a phone call to the retailer that I bought it from and a new unit was shipped the next day.
I use a WiiM Ultra running through a Schiit Mimir DAC/Preamp. That in turn runs through a pair of Hypex NC250MP Monoblocks via XLR cables, and out of a pair of Dali Sonik 5 speakers. A fairly modest set up with plenty of satisfying sound for me in my 12’x20’ basement man cave with 7’ ceilings. 😊
Good to see you cover this as I believe streaming is the wave of the future now. One correction worth mentioning:The Bluesound Node Icon is a streamer AND DAC with dual mono ESS9039Q2M chips. I enjoy mine, but I will say the preamp functionality is limited and I would like to add a dedicated preamp for overall better sound presentation: gain stage, better volume control, clarity and separation. Really good streamer though. I used to use a laptop.
I know it's a pain in the ass but old school works for me. Files on my own drives (no cloud / services). Weak ass but silent PC. Decent old DAC. Decent older AB amp. Good speakers. Good speaker placement. I'm all set.
I know there's probably about 5% of the last mile I'm missing, but it sounds pretty good.
I honesty couldnt tell a difference between the wiim pro and mini... i mean, i did upgrade from a 10+ year DAC but i just dont hear any difference. Quality of source material above all!
A small older PC that is laying around, connected USB to an external DAC makes for a great streamer. These little Lenovo/DELL/HP/MacMini "one liter PCs" that are about 1x6x6 are about silent. And being a PC they are extremely flexible in what software players are installed and how they can be used. Play your own ripped library or stream from the providers. (My own system in the family area is an early i5 PC into a receiver with a Burr Brown DAC. It sits next to my Turntable. I expect to upgrade the as i get closer to retirement but as of now it works excellent for casual listening. The feet on my 45 year old turntable needed replaced and I bought matching ones for the PC and my Denon CD player and now the PC looks the part.)
Heos seems fine now. App functionality is fairly comprehensive these days and streaming sound quality from the Denon amp I have seems about the same as the Wiim Pro Plus hooked up to the same amp.
Android Tablet running USB Audio Pro (bypasses the Android sound mixer), connected via usb C to my Eversolo DAC Z8. Start UPNP renderer in UAPP settings, then connect Bubble UPNP running on another device (IOS or Android) to the UAPP renderer and now you have your own bit perfect streamer. UAPP and Bubble UPNP are paid apps but really worth it. UAPP is only available on Android I believe.
I bought a $20 bluetooth receiver that had an optical out built in. Optical runs into Video 2 of my AV receiver. Runs off a modest mobile phone charging brick. My old tablet got repurposed as a streaming tool at my hifi. The sound through the speakers, while streaming from Tidal, is nuts. And it cost me a couple coffees.
I use an older windows 10 PC with JRiver MediaCenter software (<$100) to manage and play my 1.5Tb of music stored on SSDs (mostly FLAC files). Digital out to my Arcam SA-10 integrated amp with onboard DAC. My 55" TV is the monitor where everything displays (using wireless mouse and keyboard). The software also manages my 1500+ HD movies (8Tb - big on Film Noir) and TV series (2Tb). Adopted this system at least 10 years ago - before 'streaming' existed. 😆 I'm a vinyl enthusiast too!
