1) The first time I saw an oil painting was in grade school on a field trip to the Gardner Museum in Boston and I knew that's what I wanted to learn.
2) I've always believed that there's room enough in the world for everyone; so, no need to fear that you won't make it.
3) From the beginning, I knew I'd be painting flowers in a still life setting. I love flowers. Guild members said I would never sell still lifes on Cape Cod. The first show I participated in I only had eight paintings under my belt (all I had done in 12 years). I sold five. Later that week I got a call from a visitor who had come to my booth asking if I had any paintings left--she bought two.
4) Before I participate in a show, I will write my expectations down in my Show Notebook as well as what I would consider it a success if X happened. I will review this after the show ended and then write about the whole experience. Here, I also make note what I would change or do differently the next time. It's always beneficial to go back and review once in a while. It always generates ideas for what to paint next.
5) I also paint abstracts which started from my not wanting to waste paint. I'd clean the paint left on my palette and randomly fill a blank canvas over several painting sessions. I keep this hung up in my living room and when something emerges, I'll finish it. People really like these. I learned later that that is how some of the abstract artists in the Guild started painting abstracts. So, I fell into the same cycle as others. I feel validated.
I'm wishing great success and lots of fun to everyone on their journey. ❤
