■ (1) The Mountain Temple in That Winter Part 2: Simply and Humblely (Aired January 28, 2020)

In the remote mountain valley of Yeongyang-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, there is a hermitage belonging to Monk Yukjam, who is said to have built it with the courage to carry just as much as one’s wishes.

He entered monastic life in his twenties and has been practicing asceticism in the mountains for over thirty years.

He is a self-proclaimed and widely recognized "A-frame Master" who effortlessly carries heavy loads of firewood.

He mends his worn-out clothes and embroiders saury fish on his torn dining table.

He says he does not use any home appliances whatsoever, and that kimchi can simply be stored in earthenware jars buried underground.

In the dining hall, which resembles the humble monk, there isn't even a common cutting board, yet he whips up a quick and easy dish of dried radish greens soup and pumpkin sticky rice cakes!

However, even for this monk who has cast aside worldly desires, there is one thing he keeps on hand: wood for cremation.

To avoid being indebted to those who follow, he has personally prepared the wood for his funeral.

He believes that life should be that simple and light.

A monk living in harmony with nature.

Perhaps life becomes happy when we free ourselves from the unnecessary.

I listen attentively to the monk's words to live simply and modestly.

■ (2) Round and Round: The Remote Regions of Gyeongbuk Part 3: Winter at the Hermitage in Chunyanggol (Aired February 9, 2022)

Gakhwasa Temple, which houses seven hermitages, is situated on Mt. Gakhwa in Bonghwa, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

I went to hear the stories of the monks residing at Seoam, a hermitage located to the west of Gakhwasa Temple.

Venerable Hongin, who says he is practicing to find happiness.

As I warm my body with the hot tea he serves and watch him tending the fire in the hearth, I feel as though I can sense, even if only a little, the happiness he seeks.

Venerable Boseong, who says he is staying at Namam to find a comma in simplicity.

He says that during this winter retreat, he is focusing even more on his practice to shed the complexity of his mind.

He reportedly eats simple side dishes and homemade seaweed soup when the time comes, and devotes himself to spiritual practice by walking in the courtyard.

Today is the day he goes shopping at Gakhwasa Temple.

The storehouse at Gakhwasa Temple is not fancy, but it is filled only with the essentials.

Venerable Boseong carries a A-frame carrier, packing only the necessary ingredients in the required quantities.

The steep and narrow path back to Namam is also a form of practice for Venerable Boseong. Simply and modestly,

We meet the monks who have sought refuge in remote areas to empty themselves of everything.

■ (3) That Winter, It Is Truly a Remote Area Part 2: Alone in the Deep Mountains (Aired December 31, 2019)

Hanbatgol in Yeongwol, Gangwon-do. There is a small hermitage deep in the mountains where even phone reception is poor.

Aside from two dogs guarding the temple, it is a quiet place with not even a hint of human presence.

Monk Jisan, who came alone into the deep mountains three years ago to build the hermitage with his own hands and live there,

even a life in nature that seems so peaceful becomes a bustling activity when winter arrives.

Although life in the remote area leaves no room for physical rest, the monk has no worries.

“If everything in the world went according to plan, what worries would there be?”

Although his days are busy preparing for winter,

the monk cultivates his mind by throwing all sorts of distracting thoughts into the hearth. Although clearing away even a single tree felled by a typhoon is not easy, he regards his solitary life in the remote wilderness as a "journey of self-discovery."

What kind of scenery is one encountering winter alone deep in the mountains?

■ (4) With You Part 4: The New Year of the Monk of Hwagae Valley (Aired January 7, 2021)

In Hadong, Gyeongsangnam-do, lives Monk Ja-eung, who has spent 30 years farming alone while practicing Zen meditation.

Since entering monastic life in 1984, he has continued to stay at Ja-hye Jeongsa in Hwagae Valley because he loves Mt. Jiri.

Monk Ja-eung is busy washing radishes in the spring water, preparing to make winter dongchimi.

He says he is making the dongchimi in earthenware jars buried in the ground, hoping it will serve as an abundant food source for the winter.

At three o'clock in the pitch-black dawn of a cold winter, Monk Ja-eung heads to the cave to meditate.

The path feels as if he is treading on jewels. Glittering frost settles along the walking path,

beautiful like stars embroidered in the black sky.

When the sound of the bamboo stick, sig...
