A Powerful Tool to Fight Lust

Patristic Nectar

Struggling with lust is one of the most common battles Christians face. In this talk, Bishop Irenei of London explains how lust is a distortion of the heart’s God-given power to love and give. Rather than only resisting temptation, the Orthodox approach emphasizes redirecting the heart outward — through service, sacrifice, and acts of love.

Sometimes I feel like I genuinely need to leave the world and the internet to escape this. The snares are everywhere. But the Lord will deliver us.

It doesn't help that I was raised in a culture that assured me that it was HEALTHY for women to engage in lustful fantasies and GOOD for us to engage in self-abuse. The physical behaviors have been much easier for me to overcome than the imaginations. Thoughts are the hardest thing to kill.

When I do the opposite - when I’m rude, arrogant, disrespectful with people, such temptations start to attack me.

As a 30 year old who grew up in the west I would say that lust is the worst sin of our time. The sexual revolution and internet pornography has absolutely unleashed lust in a colossal manner, Fr. Josiah said it was worse than Covid.

God has been leading me to and revealing to me just how much the vocation of marriage is meant to combat the passion of lust, not just physically, but most importantly, spiritually. To live for another and to love them as God intended is to put someone else first, not one's own self, which is what lust ultimately does. True love, the love of God, is sacrificial in nature and is the kind of love we're called to give our spouses.

The story of King David and Bathsheba comes to mind. King David stayed home instead of riding into battle with his troops as he should’ve done. And as he was wandering on the roof of his palace in the evening he saw Bathsheba, the wife of one of his faithful soldiers in battle right now, bathing and in this state of idleness he got tempted and committed adultery.

The solution perfectly makes sense when you think about it. What our dear Bishop Irenei is telling us is to do a loving act of service for someone. Which in turn rewires the heart into the proper form of love instead of self service. That's genius.

Titus mentions several times to devote ourselves to Good Works. This tactic is certainly an imperative in training the heart to love others, to love God, and not so greedily love self. Thank you, may God bless you for sharing this holy wisdom. 🙏

please do a video about gluttony; a lot of us are suffering from obesity we really need some advice on how to stop ourselves (or at least ask God for strength to stop oueselves) from overeating and overindulging so much
God bless ☦️

What makes lust so difficult to talk about is that there’s elements of shame addressing this to the church and/or the world. The Church is very clear on lust, and therefore it’s hard for our humility to confess with our heart and our mouth, even to our Father. When we confess our shame to world, we are mocked for that shame’s existence and are encouraged to indulge in our carnal desires. We need God’s mercy, as with all sins, only He the Father, through His Son Jesus Christ and His Life Giving Spirit, can we be free of all evils.

actually, i know this advice works, because when i was a teenager and i would get lustful imaginations, when my parents would call me to help them, i would feel this EXTREME rage at them.

This works VERY well. I can attest. Stay busy. Idle hands...

I don't really have a problem with lust. I would love one of these for sloth though. Pride and lust get so much attention, but I would argue sloth is probably more of a problem on an individual level. As it completely breaks you of anything including going to church. I almost feel like becoming monastic is the only way to fight against this over arching sin as it is a 24/7 sin. While lust occurs sporadically and so does pride. Sloth is my over arching sin, that is why I ask.

One also needs an accountability group. The Lord gives us each other to help with our struggles. Discussing and praying together for healing. Don't carry shame or be silent. It is in the hiding and self-hatred that the devil brings his lies.
Don't neglect asking for the Spirit's miraculous deliverance. He has broken many bondages of sin in the past and he wants to help, if we'll let him.
Christ came to give us new life and that more abundantly.
