It is common for people to hike on the Highline Trail poorly prepared: inadequate footwear, like flip flops, inadequate or no water, inadequate clothing for the elevation and conditions.  Mr Sato was not one of those people. Very sad situation and a terrible accident. Condolences to his family.
But solo hiking is definitely not recommended. Five other fatalities in the relatively recent past in GNP immediately come to mind. Each of them were  hiking solo.

I mean.... how wasn't anyone worried to see a camera rolling by itself with nobody around for hours?? Also, how was the search so difficult when he left his DETAILED itinerary ?

Living near Glacier, why can’t people learn this is seriously crazy grizzly country no place to hike!

I agree with others’ comments…. Why did no one see his photo stuff such as the camera and tripod sitting there???? Hmmmm

Poor Kenji. What an awful way to pass away. He should have just let the camera equipment roll away. RIP.

We were there a number of years back and a man hiking alone on the mountain road was attacked by a grizzly and killed just the day before we got there. So sad.

I was there as a kid with my old Kodak Brownie camera in the 50's. No thought of people dying in parks.

I never was interested in hiking but love these stories.

I'm so glad that I have absolutely NO sense of adventure....

You sure do take your time getting to the meat of it.

Wait a minute.  His camera, box and and camera bag were right above him.  Why didn't the next person to come along wonder what happened to the owner.  Or  did they steal the camera gear and be the reason for the man dying?  You never  say how they found the camera.   Nothing wrong with hiking alone.  People fall in their own home and die with people around.   Poor man did nothing wrong.  Just a moment of bad luck.  Key is what wan't the next person finding camera?   Maybe yell to see if the Sato was near?

I don't understand how no one saw his tripod and camera?? Makes zero sense.

Logan trail is not the problem unless you walk to close to the edge, they have a rope railing now. When you get to granite is the problem, lots of bears.ive done I'm it many times with no problem alone . Just do the right thing and you will be fine. If not? See ya!

I hiked alone in glacier every morning for a year. ZERO bear interaction, I was born there so it's not like i don't know.  After one year, I moved back to Alaska where the bears are just as bad.  One week after I left Montana, in the exact place i had been  hiking, a guy got eaten right off his mountain bike. yeah, pucker factor...i still hike alone.

I’m so sick of people insinuating that if you don’t hike w others you’re being stupid. This man was certainly Not stupid and certainly Not reckless. Accidents happen. They happen when you’re alone and they happen when you’re surrounded by others. Being with others does not prevent you from having an accident. And having others with you is often not enough to save you. Can you choke on food? Better not eat alone. Can you die in a car accident? Better not drive alone. Can you get hit by a bus? Better not cross the street alone. Can you slip in the tub and smash your head to bits? Better not shower alone. It’s victim blaming and it’s absurd.

YoU CaNt HiKe aLoNe oh shut up yes you can. I have hiked just under a thousand miles in Glacier, all of it solo. The car ride to the park is more dangerous.

There are no “experts!”

You're fine to solo hike in Glacier National park, you just need to take precautions. Like, don't go hiking to a Fire lookout at dusk, during prime grizzly time and not tell anyone.

Sad

Noone noted the canera on the tripod alone for 3 days?
