If You Have These 10 Italian Surnames — DNA Has Revealed a Hidden Secret
Ten Italian surnames — and DNA has traced nine of them back to exactly where they came from. The tenth is still being argued about by the two research teams who went looking for the answer.
One of these names is a Longobard job title, still carried by families with no idea their ancestor ran a barbarian kingdom's paperwork. Another belongs to Calabrian mountain villages where the DNA never fully blended in — the people there never stopped speaking a form of Greek older than the word "Italy." A third crossed the Adriatic five centuries ago as a refugee and refused, for five hundred years, to marry outside the community that made the crossing with it. A fourth was planted in Sicily by a Norman king who built the last Germanic-Norman kingdom Europe raised south of the English Channel.
This is not a list of surnames. It is five buried migrations hiding inside ten ordinary last names — and one of them ends in a genuine scientific disagreement that has run for over two thousand five hundred years and still is not settled.
▸ Which Italian surname literally means "the Greek" — and what does it confirm about a population Byzantium never fully absorbed?
▸ Why did a 2015 genetic study call the match between two Sicilian villages and modern Albania "undeniable"?
▸ What do two peer-reviewed studies, a year apart, actually disagree about — and why does neither one fully win?
👇 Is your surname on this list — and did anyone in your family ever explain what it actually meant?
Ten surnames. Nine answers. And one argument even the scientists who went looking for it couldn't finish.
