At 9:34 p.m. on July 13, 1977, New York City began to disappear into darkness. Subway trains stopped inside tunnels, elevators froze between floors, traffic lights went black, and millions of people suddenly found themselves without power.
What began as a failure inside the electrical grid quickly became something much larger. Over the next 25 hours, fires burned across the city, emergency services were pushed to their limits, and New York’s existing tensions spilled into the streets.
This documentary reconstructs the blackout hour by hour: how the power grid collapsed, what happened inside the city, how engineers attempted to restore electricity, and what New Yorkers discovered when daylight returned.
