Most Popular TV Series of All Time (1986 - 2026) 📺

Bar chart race of the most watched TV series from 1986 to 2026, from The Cosby Show, Cheers and Seinfeld to Friends, CSI, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, Squid Game and Wednesday. Forty years of television, one race.
Back in 1986 a single sitcom pulled almost 50 million Americans in front of one screen every Thursday. Then cable split the audience, network numbers shrank year after year, and by 2012 NCIS could top the chart with around 20 million. Then Netflix went global. Squid Game hit 265 million views, Wednesday 252 million, and the whole chart explodes. Honestly the wildest part is how fast the throne changes hands after 2019. A show is number one for three weeks and gone.
The side panel tracks the IMDb top 10 over the same timeline (Breaking Bad 9.5, Band of Brothers 9.4, Chernobyl and The Wire 9.3). Every card in the bottom corner is a real, sourced fact.
Values are audience estimates in millions. 1986 to 2012: Nielsen US season averages (households x ~1.6 where only ratings exist). From about 2013: streaming figures (Netflix views and household counts, Amazon global reach, HBO cross-platform viewers scaled to a global estimate). Where a platform never published a number, the value is an estimate, so read it as the size of the hype, not an audited count.
Which show should have held number one longer? Tell me in the comments.
