The Railway Technical Research Institute and the Railway Transport Authority of Japan have been researching and developing the gauge-changing, or "free gauge train," for approximately 30 years.
In Japan, research and development began in the 1990s on a vehicle with freely adjustable wheel widths to enable Shinkansen trains to travel between conventional lines and Shinkansen trains, which have different rail widths.
However, after three generations of test vehicles were produced, a serious defect was discovered, and development is now effectively frozen.
This article explains the true reason why the "dream new-conventional through-service vehicle, the free gauge train," never made it into practical use.
