She’s not doing gentle parenting, she’s doing passive parenting

As a gentle parent, we have discipline and consequences. They just aren’t arbitrary bs.

This is called permissive parenting not gentle parenting.

When my kids drew on the wall I sat them down and told them that was not acceptable but then gave then soap, water and a rag and made them clean it off. That is the consequence to their actions.

That comment about that’s what kids do….yes, they DO because they don’t know any better! So, you teach them what’s respectful and expected behavior and what isn’t. It’s already been stated but as a mom of four (ages 4-18), that is NOT gentle parenting. That’s not parenting at all

That’s not gentle parenting.. that’s passive parenting and it’s lazy af. True gentle parenting involves natural consequences and punishment related to whatever happened. Ex: kid pulled up plants, kid has to clean up plants and re plant then and you are no longer aloud in the garden area for awhile. That’s a natural consequence relative to the incident.

I gentle parent my kids and it works until it doesn’t, then the banshee has to step in. 😂  
Kids grow and change and my parenting has grown and changed with them. Sometimes we just chat about things and then other times when they start pushing boundaries we go zero tolerance with firmer instruction and penalties.

Omg I’m a teacher and I’ve seen the result of “gentle parenting “ and the way some people do it is just laziness and giving in to all of a kids demands to the point where they’ve never heard NO and think they can do and say anything without consequences. It makes my job HELL!

Gentle parenting is about enforcing natural consequences like if you're throwing toys, instead of being beat, you lose the toy and are told why. The point is that there are skill consequences for actions, and boundaries are drawn appropriately. This is not gentle parenting it's permissive parenting.

Back in the 90s, I was parented in a way akin to “gentle parenting” nowadays. I am grateful every day that I never feared physical harm from my parents, and I felt comfortable telling them about most—not all, but most—of my problems. I never felt unsafe in my home or doubted their love for me. They are both still alive, and although our relationships have not been without their challenges, I am in my 30s and still on great terms with both my parents. “Gentle parenting” doesn’t mean “no time-outs” or “no consequences,” it just meant that the consequences fit the crime—if I behaved in a socially-unacceptable way, I was removed from social situations and put in time-out. If I made a mess, the consequence was I had to clean it up. If I wronged someone, my consequence was that I had to apologize and make amends to that person directly. (And they would also do things to not just reinforce my behavior, but my expectations—if they were in the wrong, they would admit it and apologize… most of the time 😅 a lot of gentle parenting just involves putting your own ego aside.)

I was not allowed to run the whole show, but I was given certain choices, like “do you want to take your art supplies or a book to keep you busy?” or “do you want to watch [Movie A] or [Movie B] tonight?” Kids still need frameworks, they can’t just run things all by themselves 😅

My mom and I have watched how some people describe “gentle parenting” (incorrectly) and talk about how she would’ve never let that slide with me. Parents’ jobs are to prepare their kids for the next stage of life, and if you’re an adult acting wild and crazy in the middle of a party or a meeting or whatever, that’ll have various social consequences to you. Good parents, gentle or otherwise, don’t hide their kids from that reality, they PREPARE THEM for it!

Natural consequences to breaking the law is jail and fines. Punishment doesn't equate to discipline. Kids need to know right from wrong, it needs to be taught when their young so they can comprehend more complex consequences. There needs to be a correlation, the discipline has to relate to the problem so the child understands.

There's a huge difference between passive parenting and gentle parenting. Passive parenting is raising undisciplined kids and refusing to correct them effectively. Gentle parenting is discipline without physical or extreme punishment. There's effective discipline involved and talking through their behavior issues and operating on logic instead of excessive punishment without some kind of explanation of consequences for behavior.

Mom of 2 girls here. I cannot understand these moms wanting their kids big events to be about them. You're the mom of the star of the day. That is your role. You're there to support them and make sure their day is a problem free and happy as possible. I cannot imagine making it worse and hurting them bc they are focused on what they want their day to be!!! So sad for that girl that walked herself down the aisle. They can never make up for that. Yoga over your kids wedding? Never in all my days. No contact is the least they deserve. I would send the reddit printout of how awful the internet thinks they truly are and how selfish and hurtful.

I’m tired of people saying that you don’t have the right to tell other people how to raise their kids you don’t for the most part but if they’re not raising their kids right I think people should take it upon themselves to help after all it takes a village to raise a child. These kids need some sort of good role models in their life.

Yeah she jsnt a gentle parent. She js a permissive parent!! I gentle parent my daughter and she knows not to draw on walls! Children have to be told what they CAN do, not just let them run wild.

omg kids from first story,    prison  time when  they get to teen  years....  i  already see it,  my sister  done same and lost custody when  they were 13 and 11 and i  got custody over them, older one was on his way to juvie,  younger to  foster care..  staying out till   6 in the morning, not coming home for  few days,  leaving and coming as they pleased, hanged out with  who  ever they pleased,  not attending school  etc.. in  just a year under my care they were on  a right path. kids need parent, not a friend,  need order,  discipline, support, directions,  advices etc...and if anyone would abuse my dog,  would get such  a  foot in the as**  flying  thru  front door, no matter of their age...
