High above Pikeville, Kentucky, two little graves sat nearly forgotten in the Appalachian woods for more than a century.
After receiving a tip from an old friend who remembered seeing abandoned graves on the mountain years ago, Shannon headed into the hills to see if she could find them.
What she discovered raised far more questions than answers.
Hidden in the woods were the graves of two young brothers:
Arthur Davidson — just 1 year old
Harley Davidson — just 3 years old
Nearby was what appeared to be an old, vandalized tomb—but no other obvious graves. Why were these two children buried here seemingly alone? Where was the rest of their family? Who did this cemetery belong to? And what happened to Arthur and Harley more than 100 years ago?
After leaving the mountain, the investigation was only beginning. Shannon reached out to local historians, genealogists and researchers and began digging through census records, death certificates and other historical documents in hopes of putting the pieces together.
The search would uncover the story of a family that moved between Kentucky and West Virginia—and reveal that one of these little boys died during one of the deadliest events in Appalachian history.
Join Appalachia Uncovered as we search for forgotten places, recover lost stories and make sure the people buried in the mountains aren't forgotten.
If you recognize the Davidson name, know anything about this cemetery, or have information that could help solve the mystery, please leave a comment. Sometimes one memory is all it takes to uncover another piece of the story.
