The largest battleship ever built died in under two hours. Yamato displaced 72,000 tons and carried nine 18.1-inch guns behind a 16-inch armor belt. On April 7, 1945, 386 aircraft from Task Force 58 caught her in the East China Sea, 300 miles short of Okinawa. The Imperial Japanese Navy never again sent a battleship against the United States.
This documentary traces Yamato from the Panama Canal lock limits that shaped her design, through her secret construction at Kure, Midway, Leyte Gulf and the charge off Samar. It covers Operation Ten-ichi-go, from the codebreakers who read the orders on March 26 to the submarines Threadfin and Hackleback in the Bungo Strait. It then follows the minute-by-minute attack by Helldivers, Avengers, Hellcats and Corsairs: the port-side torpedo runs, the flooding of her own engine rooms, the Yorktown torpedoes set to 20 feet, and the magazine explosion at 14:23.
Built from Naval History and Heritage Command records, after-action reports, loss tables and Japanese ship records.
