May 5th, 2025. I climbed Mount Tanigawa, one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. Until now, Mount Tanigawa had always been a mountain filled with smiles, but this day was different. In early May, with its remaining snow, Mount Tanigawa is still a magnificent snow-covered mountain. Because you can reach a certain altitude by ropeway, and the mountain itself is less than 2,000 meters high, many people seem to think it's an easy mountain. Certainly, the Tenjin Ridge route is easy to recommend to beginner snow climbers. However, that's only if you're fully equipped. Due to its unique terrain, the weather on Mount Tanigawa can change rapidly, and the steep climb just below the shoulder hut is quite dangerous. The Nishikuro Ridge route, considered one of Japan's three steepest climbs, is even more dangerous. I can't say anything if someone says, "You're wearing a tank top, aren't you?", but perhaps it's time for us all to re-examine our equipment and skills.
The parking lot at the Tanigawadake Information Center, located between the Shiragamon trailhead and the Tanigawadake Yoch (former Tanigawadake Ropeway) station, is also free. While the center opens at 9:00 AM, the back half of the parking lot is available 24 hours a day for hikers during the summer.
Parking at the Tanigawadake Yoch station costs 500 yen per day. Only the first floor of the multi-story parking garage is open at night (approximately 40 spaces). Toilets in the parking lot are also available at night.
