Sew your own jackets and coats this autumn with our favourite outerwear sewing patterns! From bomber jackets to wool coats and blazers, we’re sharing stylish patterns and fabrics inspired by catwalks and high-street trends to give you all the dressmaking inspiration you need for the new season.
In this week’s video, Lucy also talks about why sewing outerwear is such a rewarding project. Jackets and coats often have more wearing ease, meaning they’re usually easier to fit than you might expect. They’re not always as complicated as they look, and the payoff is huge: you’ll get endless wear from a handmade coat or jacket, you’ll feel like a sewing superhero, and it’s the perfect slow-sewing project to settle into as the autumn evenings draw in.
Whether you’re dreaming of a cosy wool coat, a sharp tailored blazer, or a casual bomber jacket, we’ve got the patterns and fabrics you need to sew your perfect outerwear.

If you get a technique you really like from one pattern, add it to others (for example I really like the Charlotte Emma "Barberry" jacket, and it has lots of useful tailoring tricks, like adding a pleat to the centre back lining, a full facing including the back of the neck and the hem etc. I've made a couple of the M6800 coat, extending it to full length all round, adding a centre back pleat in the lining, a neck facing (gives a nicer finish than fitting the lining directly into the collar), and drafting a full hem facing (2" deep), which gives a lovely neat finish, and somewhere to sew the lining to. Or do a bias-tape-faced hem (Frumble do 4cm wide polycotton bias tape in oodles of colours). Stole a back-stay from the Princess coat (also helped with drafting the hem facing).
Satin bias-tape makes a lovely flat piping finish between the facings and the lining. It's usually 18 mm wide, so if you put one edge along the edge of the fabric, it will have a nice 3mm wide line when the coat is worn, with a standard 15mm seam allowance (often seen in higher end RTW).
Make friends with hand-sewing, it's much more flexible for fiddly bits (like understitching the facing around corners, putting set-in sleeves in etc). Also buttonholes in multiple layers of wool, when you've also got big fancy buttons. Use Anchor stranded cotton (or similar), make the buttonholes a feature.
Consider flat-lining/underlining fabric if it's a bit lighter than you want for the garment (for full-length coats, go down as far as the low hips). Cotton lawn for linen, calico for wool. Match the colour.
Woven cotton iron-on interfacing is your friend (won't melt under the iron... ask me how I know!).
Use the funky lining fabric! Except for sleeves (which really need something slippery), you can line jackets/coats in whatever you want. Dinosaur-print quilting cotton? Go for it.
Don't be afraid to draft a lining if there isn't one (other patterns with linings in will help you for this).
