Within These Walls is a 1945 American drama film directed by H. Bruce Humberstone and written by Eugene Ling and Coles Trapnell. The film stars Thomas Mitchell, Mary Anderson, Edward Ryan, Mark Stevens, B.S. Pully and Roy Roberts.[1][2][3] The film was released on July 13, 1945, by 20th Century Fox.
Plot:
Within These Walls follows Judge Michael Howland, a stern and uncompromising judge who is appointed warden of a troubled state prison. Determined to restore order, Howland introduces a strict disciplinary system for the inmates.
His belief in absolute discipline extends to his own family, particularly his teenage son Tommie. After a falling-out with his father, Tommie leaves home. Years later, Howland is shocked to discover that his own son has been convicted of armed robbery and is now a prisoner in the very institution he runs.
Meanwhile, inmate Steve Purcell earns the warden's trust and develops a relationship with Howland's daughter, Anne. Anne eventually learns that Steve was actually innocent of the crime for which he was imprisoned—he had taken the blame for his brother.
The story reaches a tragic climax when a prison escape is planned. Tommie's conscience leads him to prevent Steve from participating, but the violent inmate Martin Deutsch shoots Tommie during the escape attempt. Howland pursues Deutsch, bringing the confrontation to a deadly end.
The film explores justice, parental authority, redemption, prison reform, loyalty, and the devastating consequences of rigid discipline.
