My Uncle always drove a fancy car - he was a HotShot at IBM ....
One day he turned up at our house  (1967 ish ) in a glossy red Vitesse and took my Father and I out for a run down the long road to Tilbury Docks , turned around / stopped at the r'bout at the bottom and let my Father drive back home .  I'll never forget the way the two of them were grinning at each other and happily chattering "car talk" . That moment probs began my love affair with nice cars . They're both long gone but I'm trying desperately hard to hold on to those happy memories ....

Hi. As someone who was a young boy when this car was new, I have an old truck for you where the noisy water pump is concerned. Get the car up to temperature, then take off the radiator cap & put in a Teaspoon full of Vaseline, it will melt & dissolve in the hot water, pass through the water pump & lubricate it from within & quiet it down.

I have been a fan and owner of Triumph cars since  1974, (first a Vitesse 1966 1600cc Mk1, the a Mk2 2000cc, a Dolomite 1850.and for the last 45 years my Triumph Stag, and a 13/60 Herald convertible. So I would say save it, and use it. Good luck. Bob

Had a few of these in my time! They bolt apart like a big Mecano set. Very easy to work on. Chassis outriggers are a weak point as are the front suspension trunnions and engine thrust washers. Good luck bringing this one back to life!

My family used to live across the A45 road opposite the Main Triumph service station, Allesley, Coventry.
My father was a businessman in the city and he loved his cars. He had one of the 1.6Ltr Triumph Vitesse cars.
He would often have it serviced there. Anyway, my father was always looking to go that bit faster in his cars.
One day on going to pick his Vitesse, he got called into the Service managers office, a Mr. Wills and got asked
what my father had done it his Vitesse. His reply was, had the engine blue printed, wider wheels and stiffer suspension.
On being asked why, he said. It's not fast enough, it doesn't handle round corners and the suspension wallows!
Sometime later he got a call from Mr. Wills to pop over. On arriving, he got handed a set of keys and got asked
to have this Vitesse for a while. It was a prototype of the 2Ltr.

That’s going to be a really good car.
To have it not seized is one thing but to have it as a runner and even charging with just a battery and fuel is remarkable 😊

I had an old Triumph engine that had stood for decades and the fuel pump needed to be replaced and the water pump was clattering.  After about 10 miles of driving up to temperature the water pump was silent and so far has not leaked.  Just be patient with the pump. Those Triumph engines are pretty resilient and 68K miles is nothing. Those Herald / Vitesse cars always suffered in the bodywork, but being on a separate chassis and many body pieces being bolt on meant they were repairable. The bonnet does separate from the wheel arches which can be repaired if you are so inclined, otherwise the bonnet can open as you are driving.
Clutches sometimes seize on and need to be freed by putting foot on clutch and starting with the engine in gear or towing it with the clutch pressed. That can fix it without a strip down.

Wow! I had a Mk2 Vitesse, which was my 2nd car. Love the purrrr of that beautiful 6-cylinder engine. It was a joy watching this video, and it brought back many memories.

The Triumph Vitesse was my "hero" car when growing up in the 60's! Everyone had the Herald 1200's and 1360's, but the Vitesse with that 2 litre straight 6 had a certain sound that could be deciphered from the top of our street.  My mate and I used to sit on a bench half-way down our street listening to cars as they approached (with our back to them) and we would tell by the sound of them what they were.  Try doing that on any given street today!

As a child, the Vitesse was the car I was going to buy when I grew up. I thought they looked beautiful and fast. Little did I know car models changed over time and there would be none left when I was 17.

The reg is worth £400 all day long... Great find...

1972, aged 5, I ran into the back of one of those. The pointy rear light punctured my forehead and poured blood. I was holding and throwing away cups of it in my hands as I ran home. Banging on the ftont door my sister was shouting for me to "go 'round the back!" My wailing got her off her arse. Never forget her horrified face when confronted with my blood soaked face and clothes. Dad came home from work and took me to Corbetts Hospital, Stourbridge for two stitches. "What a brave boy" the nurse beamed.
Now I have grandkids who have yet to bored with that "Triumph story"..🤣 The circle of life.😏

My favourite car that was. I use to see one in immaculate condition in Birchington kent my old home at Margate.. Every  summer I would see it. Was  a vintage car then.. Obviously been well looked after or overhauled. I am 78 now and triumphs were my favourite. They were unique to me, different from the rest.    Well done with that one. A nice find..

Sad to see this so rotted. In Canada cars rarely get this bad and we have so many rust prevention options. My preference being KROWN or Canadian Tire a massive chain from coast to coast to coast. This is such a dream car for Canadians. Sending a lot of love across the Atlantic.

I bought a Vitesse 6 convertible - the 1600 cc version in the 1990s for £70. It ran fine but had quite a bit of junk in it. The first day I had it I cleaned it out thoroughly and found an unopened three pack of durex condoms dated 1967 and half an ounce of hash under the back seat. After that I often worried my ownership was boring it by comparison...

My first car, bought in 1983, was A 1967 Triumph Herald 13/60 convertible, reg APD 97OH (if memory serves) ... it had the Vitesse-style 'grinning' grill. I'd alway wanted a Herald since my uncle rocked up in one and gave us all a ride around New Haw when I was about 8. An AA inspection recommended replacing the big ends because it was chattering, so I knocked the price down to cover that but when I had the job done, the chattering remained. I realise now it was probably the water pump or fan belt pulley. I swapped the engine for a Spitfire unit that I got off another (non-runner) Herald ... but I actually did blow the big ends of that so I had to put the old engine back in again. Sigh. Fun times :)

That is one awesome car that deserves to be saved! Such an iconic shape, evil looking face, and a fantastic straight six engine....just love it!
