I live in Amsterdam, go to Haarlem a lot. I love it. It's not ruined by mass tourism yet, I truely hope it stays that way, it's more relaxed not a circus where I live, same counts for Alkmaar by the way!

The windmill the Adriaan burned down in 1932 and the people of Haarlem raised the funds to rebuild the windmill in its original shape

By the way, the Bavo cathedral was built as a Catholic church with lots of statues and fresco’s. During the reformation in the 16th century the protestants confiscated it, took all the statues out, painted over the fresco’s and made it into a church for the Dutch Reformed community.

14:35 Haarlem (my hometown) is absolutely not an outskirt of Amsterdam. It is a separate city and we are nit and never will be a part of Amsterdam

11:20 Teylers museum is the oldest museum in the Netherlands. It's quite special with a very divers collection, from fossils, scientific instruments, minerals to art, including drawings by Rembrandt.
When I grew up, there were far more cars in the inner city, and it was always very noisy, it took me a visit to Teylers' oval hall in the back, far from the streets, to realise how quiet it was there.

The old old library was in a building behind the City Hall at the Grote Markt. When they moved to the new building, they encouraged the people to borrow extra books from the old place, to bring them back to the new place when they were done reading, saving a lot in transporting the books.

The larger sailing ships passing the bridge used to be cargo ships that sailed all over the country in the days before engines (and even after) and used to be owned by a family, living aboard. Nowadays, many are beautifully renovated and still function as sailing ships. Many are used as a home but are also for hire for holidays, day trips and the likes.

The fact that many boats and ships pass through the bridge is usually not a parade, but the bridge crew opening the bridge at certain hours, or wait until several ships can pass collectively and not for every individual boat or ship...
