I love the sprayed edges. I love a beautiful special edition book!  Don't care for jaundiced pages...do love the smell of an old book.  Although I agree they don't all need to be sprayed, etc., beautiful books are my jam! You do you , I'll do me! 😊😜

They cause impulse buying and FOMO. A brilliant marketing tactic really.

On hard back books, dust jacket comes off. So as not to be damaged

Trully agree. I love to read and i am so over the aesthetic library trend. I want to have my book at the beach, in the forest, i want to shove it in my bag... it’s not about how the book looks. It’s about the story.
I love that my books live

All the people that freaked out when you threw the dust cover 😂😂

I'm annoyed that it became the new marketing norm. Authors are becoming more and more annoyed that every new book announcement is flooded with "will there be a special edition?", "does it have sprayed edges?" "why are the edges only a solid color and not a design?" and more, further funneling the new norm that having 300 bread books and counting is completely fine bc only "superficial" hobbies like makeup are overconsumption.
Plus, a lot of older works from well read authors in my native language are relaunched as special editions with sprayed edges for double the price while phasing out the regular copy and I hate! So! Much!
As much as I love a good book design like you said in your video, I hate what it does to the whole market and also the readers

Full disclosure I don’t have the funds nor the room to buy books at the moment, so books needing to be sprayed or not isn’t an issue for me. But say I did have the funds and room for books it will depend on what I think as you point out if it’s necessary to me or not to have it sprayed or not.

2:49 same! I don’t want the dust jacket to get messed up. I want it to look pretty on the shelf when I’m done

YES. Also, I hate dust jackets. Hate them. Print it right on the hardcover or foil stamp the cloth cover under the dust jacket so that it’s still pretty, please.

I cut up the dust jackets and put them in my journal. I like my books to wear with age. The only books I’m gentle with in my collection are antiques.

First thing I do with a dust cover is cut out the spine area, or an interesting section of the art, and then laminate it and turn it into a bookmark.

I love my Austen collection to be super fancy, but it’s one of the few exceptions.

The dust jacket gets puts aside till I am finished with reading.

Most of the time I put it in the bookshelf basically as a placeholder

I LOVE my poison daughter book with its gorgeous sprayed edges!!
But I also don’t like it when books have just blue on the edges… like just leave them white at that point!

I also agree on this. Not every book needs sprayed edges. If you’re gonna do it, give me a cool design. I don’t need one plain color. I feel like it’s boring.

Oh my lands, "i can't play in my hard pants"  ...just flashback to my brother saying the same thing. I fully agree not everything needs a sprayed edge.

The classic gold sprayed edge just works, it preserves the edge of the page and looks great.

I love sprayed edges, at least on good special editions. I haven't made any personally, but now if I ever make it there, I'm gonna try to make a design that fades in a really unique way.

As a printmaker, born in the 80's, I miss old deckle edges. Printed edges are kind of cool, but the pop of color distracts me while I read.
Also, I'm an abby-normal Virgo who finds imperfections beautiful. —>Young Frankenstein

I 1000000% agree. It makes special editions feel less special because everything has sprayed edges now.

I'm old fashioned I like the old book style but also I don't really see sprayed edges that much unless I'm at a bookstore and I'm like why would I want to read a book with sprayed edges and possibly damage it, I also think of the don't judge a book by it's cover and now we have book peeps that judge a book just on it's sprayed edges and whether they are good or not. It's crazy man. Crazy!
