You want to find a builder that isn't greedy and builds just a few homes a year, like two homes where he has the time to check on each home everyday to make sure the trades are doing quality work. The most important inspection of a house is the pre drywall inspection.
I've done many and carried a six foot level and a can of red spray paint and sprayed everything that needed attention. We had an excellent framing crew but they weren't perfect.
Another important inspection is after the sheetrock is hung and taped and before the walls and ceilings gets textured and painted. Carry a strong flashlight and check all joints, it's easier to fix any problems before texture goes on.
If you can look at some of the builder's previous builds and talk to the homeowners if possible.
There are a lot of good builders out there that put quality ahead of profits and know how to make sure you get what you paid for.
