What does a holiday look like when you can’t afford to travel far?

Hi, I’m Kai, a middle-aged dad in China. I’ve been unemployed for three years. This National Day holiday, I’m spending a day with my son in the small town where I grew up.

We explore the park, watch a lion dance, browse a gourd shop, play arcade games, and find an affordable lunch. After dark, we watch a molten iron sparks performance and another show on the water before strolling through the food street.

Along the way, I share local prices, conversations with people we meet, and how I think about spending money.

This is a day in my life, showing family time and everyday life in small-town China.

How do you spend your holidays when money is tight? Let me know in the comments.
