Truly really a great comparison video probably one of the best i've ever seen.

When you finished the first blend of the LW then the Meeden, visually from the camera I’m liking the look of the Meeden more. Thanks for this as I have both sets in my cart because…why not for the price lol. But definitely leaning to just the Meeden since they have a much larger set now. ❤

I went with the Meeden ( instead of the Mungyo) and boy are they nice!! Smooth and soft, can blend with my finger. But not super soft like the SOHO, almost.  I also received my pastel paper and the Winsor &Newton set of 30 oil pastels. I tried three different papers: SOHO oil pastel pad, Stonehedge black cold press paper, and CansonXL sand grain in gray.  SOHO oil pastel pad gives the smoothest finish and has glassine paper for each sheet. Very nice.  So after swatching about 10 colors from 4 different sets of oil pastels this is what I got:   Cray-pas 25 colors/standard set:  hard pastels but still can blend slightly with my finger and tools. (these were given to me so keep them for my granddaughter when she comes over) . Winsor&Newton oil pastels, set of 30 : I think they are advertised as soft but I feel they are almost as hard as the Cray-Pas!  Maybe a little bit softer , but I could not blend with my finger or the tools. I will definitely need to use a solvent. (waiting for the solvent in the mail-10 days already...starting to wonder if my order will make it).   Meeden is very soft and SOHO oil pastels are extra soft.  Next step is to practice blending and do a few practice paintings .  I find your videos very helpful and will continue to watch and learn. Thanks so much!

Very useful comparison, thank you. It also just shows what to pay attention to when using oil pastels.

lol, I just bought a 48 Lightwish after your rave about them ... then I see this video. Oh, well 🤪

Your decision to use the colors you use the least for a blending demonstration is completely valid. However, and I say this with all due respect, I would have preferred if you had used a yellow with a red, and a yellow with a blue, to see whether they truly mix well in terms of creating a vibrant new color.

I don’t have any problems with the pastels I currently use, and they blend very well, but I’ve been interested in buying the Meeden pastels. While I’m in my studio, it’s not an issue, but when I paint outdoors, I can’t take all of my pastels with me. I bring a small selection because my current pastels are able to create vibrant secondary colors through mixing, so that left me very curious, and I haven’t been able to find any video of someone reviewing the Meeden pastels specifically by mixing primary colors to create secondary colors.

So, in your experience using them in your studio, have you been able to achieve vibrant secondary colors?

Thanks, John! The comparison is helpful but I especially appreciate how they would work with each other, a factor not usually covered by most reviews. Your love of the medium itself is always refreshingly contagious! Cheerio, from across the pond.

Info correct at time of recording, there are bigger sets in the future!

What's the difference, is there one, which do I prefer....watch till the end for all the answers to all the questions!  :_ArtistsLove:

Bonjour Merci beaucoup ce travail 😊

I have both sets and I am looking forward to using them together. I have to stop buying so many oil pastels 😊.

I have been looking at these sets .  Still on the fence but thanks for the info. Maybe ill wait til there is a sale abd hop on one then lol

Excellent video

What paper are you using? thankyou

I think this is a great comparison! Thanks for pointing out the differences between the two sets. I think I would gravitate towards the Meeden, as I tend to like firmer pastels. I have the Lightwish and I'm not in love with them, but I think I need to play around with them more. Regarding lightfastness, I take it with a grain of salt. Sarah Renae Clark recently posted a video discussing and testing lightfastness of colored pencils, many of which claimed excellent lightfastness and failed abysmally. Caran d'Ache Luminance, Faber-Castell Polychromos and Derwent Lightfast all proved their worth in the testing. I assume there would be similar results with other mediums, such as oil pastels.

how do these compare in hardness and lay-down compared to Mungyo Gallery pros? I got the 48 set of the mungyos and love the texture but hate the lack of pastels/neutrals/muted colours. Instead of getting the 120 set now and duplicating a lot of colours I'm thinking of another brand and of course, Hwawon is gone. Meeden has 140 and Lightwish has 100 colour sets now, according to Amazon UK...

Do you ever paint on wood panels with oil pastels?

Hi John. I have just discovered your videos recently and I’m quite enjoying them and you! And I’m also returning to my foray into oil pastels. I love them. I’m wondering if you have tried the. MUNGYO brand? I really like them and I guess they are my favorites of the ones I have tried so far. I use sennelier too but  only at the end of the painting because they are so soft and creamy. Thanks for your videos and your information.
PS- the professional version of the  Holbein ones are pretty nice too if you haven’t tried them… Perhaps you could do a review…

Hello John, I just watched your video comparing Meeden to Lightwish Soft Oil Pastels. I am just discovering this medium again, although I have owned oil pastels for years I never really pulled them out except for a couple of times when I purchased my first Sennelier set. I was curious how they compared to Mungyo as well. I just ordered a 100 Box Set of the Lightwish oil pastels and they arrived today. I don’t own Meeden Pastels but I have the Mungyo 48 set and the 120 set coming later this week. I had Sennelier but they are packed away downstairs so I really splurged and ordered the full range from Arte Miranda. I guess I am fully committed now to exploring this medium. Thank you for your video! I am watching from San Francisco.

I have a technical question. Do oil pastels harden in their box over time and will they mold in the box? I'm sure it depends on how they are stored or climate you live in too. Do you have storage recommendations? Thank you.
