President Lee Jae-myung strongly criticized Ukraine today (the 2nd) for raising the possibility of escalating tensions between the two Koreas. On his social media account, President Lee pointed out, "We reached an agreement regarding the repatriation of North Korean prisoners of war after Ukraine requested a non-disclosure, but they unilaterally disclosed it." He added, "When the President of the Republic of Korea expressed his regret with the utmost courtesy, they claimed there was no agreement, making the head of state of the other country out to be a liar."

President Lee continued, "I express serious regret to Ukraine, which, when asked to apologize, instead speaks of an 'imminent military clash between the North and South' and attempts to instigate a war on the Korean Peninsula." He also added that further measures could be taken if there is no public apology.

President Lee's message is interpreted as being directed at a social media post by Kirill Budanov, Chief of Staff to the Ukrainian President. Chief of Staff Budanou recently referred to the North Korean troops who sided with Russia in the war in Ukraine, stating, "North Korea is learning from our war and arming itself," and argued that this behavior by the North Korean military is "above all, to prepare for active combat in its own territory."
