Luke Skywalker exists in a moment that seems to stretch out into peaceful eternity while also passing by in the blink of an eye. And then, unexpectedly, he feels something all too familiar against his weathered face: hot, desert sand. Groaning, Luke pushes his body off the dusty ground, shielding his eyes from the sun which suddenly seems twice as bright. As he blinks through the blinding sunlight, he sees that there are actually two suns in the sky, beating down relentlessly on the dusty streets that he knows like the back of his hand. The air is thick with a dry heat and the smell of dung worms and engine coolant, and squat sun-bleached clay buildings clamber over one another all around him.
His body aches with the memory of Ahch-To, of his strain through the Force as he projected himself across the galaxy, and of his quiet, peaceful vanishing beneath a golden sky. Yet here he is, sitting on the blistering hot sand of a Mos Espa alleyway.
Luke (confused): ...Tatooine? But… how is this possible?
He mutters to himself as he sits back. His hand instinctively clutches at his belt, his lightsaber is still there, tucked securely beneath the folds of his robes. Before he can make sense of where he is, a small voice calls out from behind a pile of scavenged podracer parts at a nearby shop.
Anakin: Hey mister\! Are you alright? You shouldn’t be sleeping out here in the sun. The heat’ll bake your brain.
Luke turns his head and freezes. Walking toward him is a small boy in ragged linen clothes, holding a heavy hydrospanner. His hair is a messy mop of sandy blonde, and his piercing blue eyes shine with innocent curiosity.
Luke’s breath catches in his throat. The Force around the child hums with immense, unrefined power. It is a presence Luke knows better than almost any other, a presence that once shook the galaxy in dark armor, but now rests inside a bright, dirt-smudged nine-year-old boy.
Luke (shocked): ...Anakin?
Anakin (intrigued): Huh? How do you know my name? Have you been around the shop before?
Luke (stammering): No... I… I must have heard someone calling for you nearby. I’m... my name is… Lars.
Anakin (cheery): Well, you look like you got tossed out of a sandstorm, Lars. Come on, Watto’s inside. If you’re looking to trade or find work, he’s the one to talk to. Though he’s usually in a bad mood on hot days, which is basically every day.
Luke follows Anakin as the young boy leads the way through the beaded curtain of the junk shop. Inside, the shop is packed wall-to-wall with scrap metal, broken motivators, and deactivated pit droids. Floating behind a high counter is a blue-skinned Toydarian, buzzing his small wings angrily as he gestures toward a sparking, disassembled astromech droid.
Watto: Chuba\! I told you, you little slave boy, this unit was supposed to be fixed by noon\! Now I’ve got a customer coming back and all I’ve got is a pile of worthless junk\!
Anakin (protesting): I tried, Watto\! The power coupler is completely fried, and we don't have the spare parts\!
Watto: And who’s this old scavenger? You bring me another mouth to feed, Ani?
Luke: My name is Lars. I’m a traveler whose ship was forced down nearby. I lost most of my gear, but I know my way around machinery.
Watto: A traveler, huh? You look like you barely survived a Krayt dragon. What makes you think you can help me?
Luke looks past the Toydarian at the smoking astromech droid that Watto had just been complaining about. Closing his eyes, he reaches out to it with the Force, letting his senses flow. He feels the current of electricity through the circuits, pinpoints the micro-fracture in the primary logic board, and notices the misaligned servomotor. Opening his eyes, he nods at the droid.
Luke: The power coupler isn't fried. The primary logic gate was inverted during a power surge, which triggered the thermal safety lockout. Adjust the third pin on the central processor by two millimeters and reset the bus. It'll start right up.
Watto squints suspiciously, hovering over to the droid. He grabs a pair of fine calipers, nudges the processor pin just as Luke described, and slaps the power switch. The astromech instantly whirs to life, its dome spinning as it emits a cheerful series of beeps and whistles. Anakin’s mouth falls wide open in utter wonder.
