Much to unpack here! Love it!
Each fundamentalist sect seems to have its own "origin" story, and in each one, they claim to have re-established "the original church." All the while, the mainstream churches claim that they are, individually and through apostolic succession, the continuation of that "original church." (Amongst the Baptists, this mythology found its expression in James Milton Carroll's 1931 opus, "The Trail of Blood.")
The perspective of every few generations or centuries seeing the imminent return in their current events does indeed seem like an evergreen prophecy.
